The Canning Thoracic Institute at Northwestern Medicine, renowned for its groundbreaking achievements and commitment to excellence in thoracic care, is seeking a distinguished thoracic surgeon to lead our Lung Rescue Program. This pivotal role represents an extraordinary opportunity to direct one of the nation’s leading lung transplantation programs, recognized for its innovation, high volume of transplants, and significant NIH funding.

Our ideal candidate is a visionary leader with a profound commitment to advancing the field of lung transplantation and extracorporeal support. You will be at the helm of a program celebrated for its pioneering approach and impressive outcomes, overseeing more than 100 transplants annually. Your leadership will ensure the continued success and growth of a program that stands at the forefront of thoracic surgery, setting benchmarks for excellence worldwide. This will be a full-time non-tenure-eligible Clinician-Educator at the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor.

As director of the Program for Lung Rescue, you will leverage an extensive infrastructure that includes clinical trials and a comprehensive tissue biorepository, enriching the global medical community’s understanding of lung disease and treatment. This position offers an unmatched platform to influence the future of lung care, foster innovation, and develop life-saving therapies.

Primary responsibilities include providing a wide range of Thoracic Surgery services in Northwestern Medicine’s Central region and includes shared service call, rounding and caring for pre-op and post-op patients in concert with the clinical team, and responding to local consultation requests and referrals.

Qualified candidates must have a strong clinical background experience and have completed an ACGME-accredited Thoracic Surgery fellowship/residency program, and are board-eligible or board certified in Thoracic Surgery. Thoracic surgeons in this position will participate in academic programs of the Feinberg School of Medicine, including educational programs (didactic teaching, resident training, preceptorship, and mentoring) or research programs Candidates must have completed an ACGME accredited thoracic surgery training program, and be certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. Compensation is commensurate with experience and includes excellent healthcare and retirement benefits. Position will remain open until filled.
