SAAS leaders Drs. Susan Tsai, Eugene Kim, Tracy Wang, Tejal Brahmbhatt, Jennifer Kuo, Vikas Dudeja, Connie Shao, and Gopika SenthilKumar served as panelists for the National South Asian Medical Student Association (SAMSA) conference.

SAAS leaders Dr. Susan Tsai, Dr. Eugene Kim, Dr. Tracy Wang, Dr. Tejal Brahmbhatt, Dr. Jennifer Kuo, Dr. Vikas Dudeja, Dr. Connie Shao, and Gopika SenthilKumar served as panelists for the National South Asian Medical Student Association (SAMSA) conference! The panel discussed best practices for finding mentors and fostering positive mentor-mentee relationships, especially as it pertains to medical students preparing for surgical residency applications.

Here are some key takeaways from the discussion:

  • When looking for mentors, really look at who is invested in teaching and who you are interested in learning from while you are going through rotations. And don’t be afraid to reach out to people you look up to – e.g. at SAAS events and conference!
  • Mentors come in various flavors and it’s a full 360 degree scenario! They can even be your peers, they can be hierarchically “below” your level, etc! Recognize the importance of peer mentorship!
  • Mentorship really involves having a “team of mentors” that guide you through different parts of your career! You should not just be relying on one person for everything.
  • The mentee should take the responsibility of driving the relationship – set recurring meetings, follow up with your mentors, come prepared with questions. But you can also have some of these meetings geared towards a more personal relationship and just getting to know each other.
  • Mentors should not just be trying to shape their mentees into themselves! Rather the focus should be on the individual students’ goals and passions!
  • Sponsorship starts with meeting people and building relationships. People you meet at national society meetings can be hugely influential in sponsoring you – e.g. for promotional letters, for other societies, for awards, etc. Know that introducing yourself and asking someone for help is actually very much welcomed! Don’t be afraid to do that.

This event is one of the many examples of how SAAS is invested in partnering with organizations that also share similar goals of promoting Asians in healthcare!
